Know which Santa Anita course is in use

Santa Anita is not one uniform racing surface. A card can use the main dirt track, the turf oval, or the hillside turf course. The hillside course includes a right-hand start, a downhill run and a crossing over the main track before joining the turf stretch. That geometry makes “6½ furlongs on the hillside turf course” a different handicapping problem from a conventional flat turf sprint.

Do not infer the active course from a horse's prior start or from an early search result. Confirm the current race date, number, distance, surface and course notation on the official card. The 2026 Autumn Media Guide marks hillside races with “TH” and lists multiple stakes at about 6½ furlongs on that layout.

Surface changes can remake the field

An off-turf move can alter the surface, distance context and remaining runners at once. Santa Anita's January 26, 2025 Clockers' Corner report is a documented example in which a race moved to dirt and multiple entrants scratched. The lesson is procedural: rerun the field after a material change instead of treating the earlier handicap as current.

Keep post position and program number distinct

The betting-interest number is not always a permanent physical gate assignment. Scratches, coupled interests and changes can alter how the field should be interpreted. GAMELIN compares the active betting interests it receives; it cannot repair an ambiguous or stale race identity by guessing. Reconfirm the program close to post.

Load a Santa Anita race into GAMELIN

Keep the official Santa Anita card open in one tab, then return to the GAMELIN current-race chooser. Select Santa Anita when it appears in the supported TVG schedule, or paste the exact TVG/FanDuel race URL. GAMELIN rechecks track, race and source date before accepting the card. The live source may provide current odds, runner identity, scratches, connections and source-defined handicapping context. Source coverage varies by runner and race; if it does not return runners, the manual field fallback remains available.

Understand the read level

When TVG supplies average class and average speed for every active runner, GAMELIN can run a separately labeled TVG Source Conviction screen. Eligible sparse fields use TVG Provisional Conviction: unavailable histories receive neutral values, model edges are shrunk by coverage, thresholds are stronger, and stakes are capped at 1%. Neither mapping is assigned the canonical input set's backtest record. The projected winner and the money decision remain separate.

Follow the meet, not stale copy

Santa Anita's 19-day Autumn Meet began September 25, 2026 and is scheduled through November 1. It contains 26 stakes and seven Breeders' Cup Challenge races.
