What pari-mutuel means
Pari-mutuel wagers are pooled with other bets of the same type. After applicable deductions and settlement rules, the distributable money is allocated to winning tickets. Unlike a fixed-odds offer, the price shown before wagering closes is not necessarily the price at settlement.
Different wager types use different pools
A win bet, an exacta and a trifecta are different propositions. The odds shown for a horse to win are not a quote for every ticket involving that horse. The amount bet on each finishing combination matters for an exotic payout. A ranking of horses alone cannot establish that an exacta is positive expected value.
Takeout and the displayed market
Takeout is a deduction from a pool under the applicable rules. The rate can vary with venue and wager type; do not use one universal percentage for every bet. The official wagering menu is the appropriate reference. When using displayed payout odds in a simple price calculation, do not casually subtract an invented takeout percentage a second time.
Late changes matter
Additional money can change prices near the start. Scratches, cancellations and dead heats can also trigger rules that a simple calculator does not model. Always distinguish an illustrative arithmetic return from an official payoff.
How this changes your decision
Keep the price observation time attached to the analysis. Recheck the field and current odds, and use only money set aside for discretionary entertainment. The PASS guide explains why an uncertain price or incomplete evidence is a reason not to wager. The ticket calculator estimates cost only, never pool payouts.
