Quick answer: an exacta box wins only when two of your selected betting interests finish first and second in either order, subject to the official rules. Boxing does not improve the underlying prices; it purchases more ordered combinations.
What is an exacta box?
A straight exacta requires the first two finishers in the exact order named. If you select 3 over 7, the ticket needs 3 first and 7 second. A two-horse exacta box purchases both 3–7 and 7–3. With more selections, the box purchases every distinct first–second order among those betting interests.
The combination count for an exacta box is n × (n − 1), where n is the number of distinct betting interests. Multiply that count by the base amount to find the ticket cost. The official track or operator controls permitted minimums, coupled-entry treatment, scratches and settlement.

| Selections | Combinations | $0.50 base | $1 base | $2 base |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | $1 | $2 | $4 |
| 3 | 6 | $3 | $6 | $12 |
| 4 | 12 | $6 | $12 | $24 |
| 5 | 20 | $10 | $20 | $40 |
| 6 | 30 | $15 | $30 | $60 |
| 7 | 42 | $21 | $42 | $84 |
| 8 | 56 | $28 | $56 | $112 |

Three-horse and four-horse examples
A three-horse exacta box contains six orders. For horses 2, 5 and 8, those orders are 2–5, 2–8, 5–2, 5–8, 8–2 and 8–5. At a $1 base, the complete ticket costs $6. A four-horse box contains 12 orders and costs $12 at the same base.
Adding one selection from a four-horse box to a five-horse box raises the order count from 12 to 20. The ticket becomes about 67% more expensive even though it adds only one betting interest. Always calculate the complete amount before reaching the bet slip.
Exacta box versus part wheel
A box treats every selected runner as eligible for both first and second. A part wheel can hold one or more runners in a particular position and combine them with different runners underneath or on top. Part-wheel notation and availability vary by interface. GAMELIN's calculator prices full boxes only; it does not silently treat a part wheel as a box.
Why the win odds cannot predict the exacta payout
Exactas use a separate pari-mutuel pool. The odds displayed beside each horse describe the win pool, not the price of a two-horse order. A short-priced winner over a lightly backed second-place finisher can pay differently from two popular runners, but the exact return is not established by multiplying their win odds.
A larger box may produce more winning combinations, but it also spends more and can include combinations whose potential return does not justify their cost. Coverage is not the same as value.
Use the race read before the ticket structure
First verify the exact race and active field. Then run the race through GAMELIN and read whether the available evidence supports BET or PASS. A projected winner is not proof that an exacta pool offers value. If the guarded money decision is PASS, adding combinations does not repair the missing evidence or unattractive price.
Compare other finishing-order wagers in the exacta, trifecta and quinella guide. Keep any ticket within a limit set before the race.
